    The quantification of trace elements in organic matrices requires a sensitive and selective analytical method. Due to its ability to determine multiple elements (up to 70 elements), its high dynamic linear range and its ability to detect the lowest element concentrations, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) is widely used for the analysis of organics. However, compared to aqueous solutions, organic mixtures represent a difficult sample matrix for ICP techniques.

    The determination of Chlorine is an important, but often challenging task in the industrial quality control. This is due to the widely varying matrix properties of the organic materials to be analyzed, from highly viscose till very light volatile or even gaseous, and the frequent need to differ between Chlorine-species like TICl and TOCl, like in crude oil or vegetable oil for production of alternative fuels. Even solids can be in the focus of interest, when polymer wastes are chemically recycled via pyrolysis processes to become again valuable hydrocarbons, or catalysts are checked for poisoning.

    In analysis of organic materials, especially the gases and liquefied pressurized gas samples pose not only a challenge for the analyst and hardware, but also risk potential for health and safety, when being handled improper. Besides chromatography and IR-techniques for identification and subsequent quantification of specific compounds or compound classes, the combustion based elemental analysis is widely spread for determination of Total Nitrogen and Chlorine, as undesired impurities, like in propylene and hydrogen, or the Total Sulfur, either undesired as contamination, or desired as additive for product improvement and safety, like odorant in natural gas for heating. In this web-seminars we want to share specifically our application experience for analysis of gas and LPG samples.
